Our Family

I'm Heather. I am a 21 year old stay at home mom and wife. My husband, Kevin, is in the United States Coast Guard and we are currently stationed at the black hole of America, also known as Upstate NY. Hayden was born May 26, 2009 and that's the day our lives changed for the better.

Hayden's Birth Story

I just wanted to post Hayden's birth story for anyone who hasn't heard about it and is interested in knowing it :)

My water broke at midnight May 26, 2009. Kevin called my OB and of course, never got a call back so an hour later, we arrived at labor and delivery after figuring out what I thought was pee was actually my water breaking considering it never stopped. I was admitted around 1 or so that morning after my nurse checked to make sure it was amniotic fluid and not actually urine. The contractions came on quick and they were very intense, along with having back labor. It was miserable and after a few hours of screaming through contractions, I decided it was time for the epidural or I wasn't going to make it the rest of the way. I got the epidural around 4:30A.M. and after the epidural, my OB checked my cervix. I was 3cm and 90% effaced. They decided to start me on pitocin and put a catheter in. The epidural was AMAZING and felt very strange with not being able to feel my legs. It felt like they weighed 100 pounds a piece. I got a little rest for about an hour, no actual sleep though. Around 8:30, I started feeling A LOT of pressure. No one knew I was ready to push because the contraction monitor wasn't picking up all of my contractions and I couldn't feel anything except pressure. My OB came in to check my cervix again and she felt Hayden's head. I freaked out. I had no idea I was that close already. So, after an hour and a half of pushing, Hayden David made his appearance into the world weighing 6 pounds 11 ounces and 20 inches long.

He had to be taken straight to the NICU after me only being able to hold for a minute. We didn't get to hold him again until he was 4 days old. He had fluid in his lungs, causing him to breathe too fast and obviously causing him to work over time. He also developed jaundice while in NICU. He had to stay at the hospital for 6 days so I had to go home without him. While it was very hard to go home without him, I am glad he only had to stay a few extra days longer from me being discharged and not months and months.
